The Divine Prescription

Abrahamic religions and cultures the world over revere the fig, regarding it as a poignant symbol of God’s people, his ultimate compassion, spiritual and physical health, prosperity, and security, among other interpretations. Thirty-nine Bible verses refer to figs, from their appearance in Eden and pivotal role as a leafy shroud to mask the shame of humanity in Genesis, to the parables of Jesus, and lastly, concluding with a symbolically-charged passage in Revelations.

Man was blessed with the fig by his creator. It comes as no surprise that, in addition to functioning as crucial sustenance, man has also utilized the fig for its medicinal properties. In 2 Kings 20:1-7, King Hezekiah falls ill. God ordains Isaiah to prepare and apply a topical poultice of figs to the king’s ailment, a boil—linguistic clues imply “boil” may have referred to inflammation or unceration in this context—to restore him, and it was so. The poultice was applied, the promise fulfilled, and Hezekiah healed.

Isaiah 40:8 — “The grass withereth, the flower fadeth: but the word of our God shall stand forever.”

The fig is alkalinizing, anti-inflammatory, anti-coagulative, anticancer, and antioxidant-rich; it is functional, harmonious nutrition tailored perfectly to our requirements as man. God’s guidance was our original divine prescription to achieve dynamic health and wellness. His word will persist indefinitely, unaffected by time and unchanged since the day of our creation.
